Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a revolutionary new procedure that uses the natural healing properties of the blood to enhance, repair, and regenerate tissue. PRP is gaining in popularity in multiple medical specialties, including sports medicine/orthopedics, cosmetic/aesthetics, gynecology, urology, and wound healing.

In order to understand how PRP works, it is important to have a basic understanding of the human blood. Our blood is made up of a liquid called plasma, filled with small solid components of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

The platelets work as important clotting factors at wound sites, helping to stop bleeding and establish a clot, essentially plugging a hole at the site of a bleed. In addition, platelets contain many proteins known as growth factors which are important in cellular healing. The platelet-derived growth factors help regenerate cells in the body.

The objective with PRP therapy is to increase the platelet count in a wounded or damaged area in order to accelerate the body’s own healing process and facilitate cell rejuvenation.
